Report on the 3ème Cycle Romand de Recherche Opérationnelle (Zinal, March 3-7, 2002)
Discrete optimization & LEDA
The seminar organized each year by the "3ème Cycle Romand de Recherche Opérationnelle" took place in the village of Zinal. Thirty participants coming mainly from EPF Lausanne, University of Fribourg (DIUF) and Geneva (HEC/Logilab) and also from Air France and EIVD Yverdon attended this spring seminar. Two invited speakers have presented recent research results. These speakers were :
· Prof. Alexander Schrijver, CWI, Amsterdam (the Netherlands)
Discrete Optimization : Theory and Applications with the following talks : Matching and Edge-colouring Optimization at Dutch Rail Matching and S-paths Minimizing a submodular function Graph Drawing and Eigenvalues· Prof. Kurt Mehlhorn, Max-Plank-Institute für Informatik, Saarbrücken (Germany)
Inside LEDA with the following talks : Some of the Theory behind LEDA Data Structures and Graph Algorithms Certifying Graph Recognition Algorithms Curve Reconstruction
The documents dealing with these talks can be downloaded from the web site :
We had the opportunity to get an insight into some of our colleagues' research fields : Frank Crittin (EPFL) : An efficient generalization of secant methods for solving expensive nonlinear systems of equations ; Cesar Beltran (Uni Geneva) : The radar subgradient method applied to the unit commitment problem ; Olivier du Merle (Air France) : Operations Research at Air France ; Sylvain Perron (Ecole Polytechnique de Mointréal) : Algorithms for l1-embeddability ans related forms ; Claude Tadonki (Uni Geneva) : Linear separation with Analytic Center Cutting Plane Method ; Stefano Picozzi (EPFL) : On canonical representations on convex polyhedra ; Yvan Hachez (CORE, Louvain) : Convex optimization over nonnegative polynomials with interpolation constraints and Pierre Hansen (Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal) : Finding conjectures in graph theory by computer.
As always, the dinners were privileged moments of discussion in a relaxed atmosphere. We were pretty lucky since we could enjoy the sunny weather on the ski slopes.
Lastly, we would like to thank the President and the Vice-President of the 3e Cycle Romand de Recherche Opérationnelle, Dr Michel Bierlaire and Dr Alain Prodon, for organizing the very interesting meeting.
